FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Steps for RBS Certification
1. Register as an Alcohol Server.
Register with the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (CA ABC) at their Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) Portal at https://abcbiz.abc.ca.gov. Please note that CA ABC charges a $3.00 registration fee that is separate from the training course fee.
2. Find your server ID number
When you register at the ABC/RBS Portal, you will be given a nine-digit server ID number. You can find this on your Dashboard page in the “Server Certificate Details” box. You will need this number to register for our training course. NOTE: When registering at the ABC/RBS portal, you will also be given a tracking number. This is NOT your server ID number.
3. Sign up for the training course.
Sign up for our Responsible Beverage Service Training course at RBSTrainingCA.com. The cost of the course is $12.50 and you will have access to the course for 90 days after you sign up. Log into your account at RBSTrainingCA.com and click the “Access the Course” button. In the “Welcome” section of the course, you will need to enter your nine-digit server ID number and your last name, both exactly as they appear in your ABC/RBS Portal Dashboard.
4. Complete and pass the training course.
Please note that there is an assessment at the end of the course to test your knowledge. This assessment is NOT the final certificate exam. You will still need to take that certificate exam on the ABC/RBS portal. Within 24 hours of your passing the course (and usually much quicker than that), we will submit your name and server ID number to the ABC/RBS Portal to give you access to the certificate exam.
5. Take and pass the certificate exam.
You will take the exam by signing into your account at https://abcbiz.abc.ca.gov, going to your Dashboard, scrolling down until you see the “Server Training” box, and clicking the “Take Exam” button. You have up to three attempts to pass the exam by scoring 70% or better, and you must pass the exam within 30 days of passing the training course. In addition, if you were employed as a server prior to 7/1/22, you should take and pass the exam before 8/31/22.

The purpose of RBS training is to train those who are seeking employment or are currently employed as servers of alcoholic beverages or as managers of such servers. Such training provides servers with the knowledge and skills to responsibly serve alcoholic beverages in order to prevent underage drinking; alcohol-related incidents, such as injuries, property damage, public disturbances, and illegal activity; and damage to businesses, such as fines, closings, loss of liquor licenses, and lost jobs.
You need to complete RBS Training if you are a server of alcoholic beverages or a manager of such servers. Servers include those who check IDs, take customers’ orders for alcoholic beverages, pour alcoholic beverages for customers, or deliver alcoholic beverages to customers. Managers of alcohol servers include those who train, directly hire, or oversee alcohol servers.
